Identifying ring inscription

Way back in the seventies my dad gave me a ring that he found with his metal detector. I've always wondered about the inscriptions.

It's just soft enought to bend and a nicer colour than 9 karat ones. 18 karat?

Any ideas?

Yup. It's likely oriental. I suspect Chinese but could be Japanese. The front looks like it might be a chop (i.e. a signet ring) because the characters (if that is what they are) are raised and so will collect the ink from a pad. Most such chops are made of ivory, jade or porcelain rather than gold AFAIK.

Beyond that, nothing else as you correctly state. I certainly can't read the inscriptions.

Most certainly not been through the British hallmarking system.

Very mysterious.
My thoughts (FWIW).

The oval bothers me. In most Asian writing there is a tendency to box things up on the horizontal and vertical. There are styles and scripts that might have a circle or oval but it would not be on a diagonal (single strokes may often be diagonal though). The stroke goes beyond the oval and there are cursive calligraphy scripts which are very stylized but they are more for true brush strokes; I wouldn't expect them to be cold-worked into metal (not that I really know).

The three short strokes on the left could be a radical that might be on the side of a character.

The stamp on the inside, possibly a maker's mark, looks like a tall character that would normally be vertical but the two other small shapes look like phonetic shapes (ruby characters) that might be read with the ring horizontal.
