I understand everything you say (you are very good in explaining it, did you or are you still playing competitional chess?)
Thank you. I've recently resumed after a two-decade layoff.
except the part with "waste a tempo moving it back after h3", the intention for Ng4 is to weaken our defense to d4, that is, he will exchange it for bishop in e3,
But that bishop won't be there then, as per Halsdorf. Last fiddled with by cheesehead on 2013-09-07 at 04:39 |

Ok, I spent some time yesterday with this position, but SWMBO had different plans. I had a look today again. I still don't like Nd1. Too defensive.
I think even Rb1 is better, defending the pawn, black can't take the horse in c3 right now (that would be very bad for him, we open our rook if we take with the pawn, or threat his rook if we take with the queen), so if the pawn in b2 is defended, we are free to move the horse anywhere... (I did not say that Rb1 is a good move, I just said that - in my opinion - even this move is better than Nd1). So, my vote is: Nf3 - 5 points Nge2 - 4 points f4 - 3 points Rb1 (because I mentioned it) - 2 points Nd1 - 1 point I know I am minority here, but this is the essence of "vote chess". There are only about 18 hours left. I will let another few hours, in case someone wants to argue more, and in case WMH wants to give an "official" vote with points (only Cheesehead gave a vote, as I remember, but I will re-check the former page after I post this current message). Tomorrow morning at 8 (10 hours from now) I will post Nd1, if no other things pop up in the thread. To avoid being late again, in case I forgot, or something happens, anyone else from the team is welcomed to post the move! Wow! That is what I call "close!" (sicilian) hehe... (the "3.5" was unexpected, but I will put it in the table, as it works for me this time, hehe, just kidding)
BB, care for a vote please? (I still have hopes to win ) edit: this is very frustrating, two of you considering Nd1 MUCH better than the other moves (you did not give a "4", but a "3" and a "3.5", so the challengers are far behind) and me freaking failing to see why! Last fiddled with by LaurV on 2013-09-09 at 16:00 |

I don't like being the deciding factor, since I have virtually no strategic or tactical skill compared to you guys.
Cheesehead made a skillful case for Nd1. WMH also likes it. Were I in this position in a casual game I would almost surely play Nf3, but then again, I almost always lose. So Nd1 it is. Nd1: 5 Nf3: 5 h4: 4 Nge2: 3 f4: 2 |

Perfect. (You crushed me! Now, if we lose, I know who to blame for it..)
Joking apart, regardless of the result, I think we are making a very good team. Better than my former one. No offense intended to Dubslow... Updating the table, just for the sake of finishing a started thing which looks nicer without empty rows... Look to that table! So close and so nice! We are a good team! We already won this game, regardless of the final result... Yaaarrrrr.... Last fiddled with by LaurV on 2013-09-10 at 03:55 |

Getting c3 in is worth a lot, and the N on d1 isn't really stranded there ... uh ... once we move the Be3 (if Black is so foolish as to Nf6) or f-pawn out of the way.
I just looove openings where moves like Nh3 and Nd1 are sound. (I guess that could be abbreviated: I looove closed openings, and for more than the pun value.)
Updating the table, just for the sake of finishing a started thing which looks nicer without empty rows... Look to that table! So close and so nice!
8 Nf3 and 8 Nge2 aren't bad. Giving them a 2 and a 3 like I did was maybe not quite right. (If I'd said 3 for Nf3, we'd be off in another direction now ... wondering (some of us) what might have been ... but I just don't like shutting off the f4 possibility yet, so a 2. And I'm probably not going to give the f-pawn-blocking 9 Nf3 any points, now that we've committed Nd1. King-side attack, here we come.)
We are a good team!
