Default Move 4

I have no problem accepting White's slightly late move of Bg2.

Me neither. Are we going to let them cook before 4..Bg7? Or can we make an alternative move?

Bg7 is certainly the "book" move. The other alternative that I have seen is d6 which they would probably follow with d3. We still have to move our bishop in anticipation of future castling so I have no problem with Bg7 this move.

Let's wait and see what Brian says (David is away until 24 August). But I'd like to throw the ball back in their court quickly if we can....

Here's what David wrote last move. So I guess we can take his agreement with 4...Bg7.
I was sure I saw the 10th somewhere.
You lose me on the 15th until the 24th. TBH I think the next 2 moves are pretty obvious. Bg2 and then probably Bg7. You could quite possibly guess at something like d3 followed by d6 after that.
I am perfectly willing to follow the standard line of the closed sicillian like we did last time. It is later on that the differences will start. I think it would be nice if it wasn't just them correcting our mistakes in the last game though.
I too advocate 4...Bg7.
(And I, too, have no problem accepting their late move.)

As for when we play it: it would be nice to give David a good chance of plenty of contribution to move 5, wouldn't it? Shall we wait a few days, just so that if they try to compensate for their goof last move by playing really quickly this time, there will still be plenty of time to play our 5th after David returns?

Or is that a bad idea? I note that you, Rich, are keen to play quickly. And David will still get some time even if move 5 comes around very soon. So, I'm not sure...

Brian, you are right. Let's postpone our move until the last hour or so on 25 August so David has input on our next move.

Hmmm, if we postpone our move right to the very last moment (25 August) David may actually have some input in this move too. However, if he then chooses to advocate a different move from the one which we've decided on, there will be very little time to discuss it. Our experiences from game 1 show that that situation leads to problems. Not that David would encourage such problems by arbitrarily deciding to disagree with the rest of us at the last minute - he wouldn't - but it does make any involvement of his on this move pretty superfluous.

I was actually thinking more of a compromise. I thought we would have to write off David's involvement with move 4 (he seems to have suggested 4...Bg7 already in any case) but that we should make certain that he will take a full part in the discussion of move 5 even if our opponents respond very quickly. I agreed with your earlier statement, Rich, about throwing the ball back quickly, largely because I think our opponents and the spectators can get frustrated and bored if the game drags while still in its easy opening moves. So I was thinking of spending perhaps 3-4 days this time, making our move on about 21 or 22 August.

Paul, what do you think?

I am happy with 4..Bg7. I think we should wait a while before playing so that we have David's input for our next move. Four brains are better than three

21 or 22 August is fine by me.

Had my first day back at work yesterday after being away for two weeks without cell or internet access. Ouch!

Should one of us, during the coming hours, post our move 4...Bg7 in the main thread and PM Serge then?
