Default Move 31

They have a clear threat, as far as I can see, of playing 31...Bd3 followed by 32...Bf1+ 33.Kh1 Bh3+ 34.Ng1 Ree1.

There's not much I can see to do. Playing h3 followed by Nh2 is no good because of ...Rg3+.

Perhaps we should play 31.Ng1 hoping to be allowed to play Qxf4. They can quietly reply 31...Be5 of course and then continue with the invasion of the other bishop on d3 and f1. But we could just see if they lose their cool-headedness for a moment and allow Qxf4.

Or have I missed a wonderful saving plan for us?

I don't think we can rely on them making a mistake.
Another strong option for them is Rc1 followed by Rc2. Ng1 can lead to our king being trapped in h1 by the h pawn, the knight on g1 and the opposing rook on c2. It might still be the best move though. I think we have probably lost this game.

The only thing I'd add is that since everything loses it doesn't matter too much what we play. Any of the moves 31.Ng1, 31.Nd4, and 31.Bxb5 would be okay as far as I'm concerned. An alternative, of course, is 31.Resigns, but I'm not sure if this is quite the right moment for that. I think it's good etiquette to let them play an obviously killing move and then resign at that point.

I think it would be best to play until mate can be seen. I think Ng1 is my preference.

Pace has disappeared, but I guess we should wait for Rich to respond. He's often busy but still always manages to post his views in due course.

Hi guys, I've shown up in due course  and, yes, we are in a pickle! I think Ng1 is our only alternative.
