Well, I'm a half-full glass type of person so I am optomistic. I'm for 22. Qb1 as it seems Brian and Z-F are.
David, have you had a chance to look at our position further with a chess board? |

I agree removing the knight looks like a good idea. My biggest concern is that black looks to have gained the pawn on f4 if we do Qb1.

henry,
You have a specific line in mind where we lose that pawn? I see something like the following: 22. Qb1 Nxf1 23. Kxf1 Bxe4 24. Qxe4 exf4 25. Nxf4 and even though the knight is pinned, we can unpin it in our next move (or even take their pawn with check, then unpin). |

Here's the way I see that line going:
22. Qb1 Nxf1 23. Kxf1 Bxe4 24. Qxe4 exf4 25. Qxc4+ Kh8 26. Nd4 f3 And we are even on pawns, and have a Queen and knight vs. two rooks. Last fiddled with by richs on 2013-03-08 at 02:02 Reason: Correct Qc4+ to Qxc4+ |

I endorse the comments of Zeta-Flux and Rich, and would also point out that Black can win the pawn on f4 - if they don't find anything better to do - in the other line as well: 22.Qc1 Nxf1 23.Bxb7 Nd2 followed by ...exf4 (if 24.fxe5?? Rf1+ as I missed and you had to point out to me, David!). With the strong knight where it is and our queen hemmed in on our first rank, winning it back will be much more difficult than in the lines which Zeta-Flux and Rich suggest.

I was actually thinking more along the 22.Qb1 Nxf1 23.Kxf1 Bc8 24. (something) exf4 line.
I admit similar can happen on the Qc1 line. It is worth considering how we avoid losing the pawn for free and end up with a protected passed pawn now though. |

In case it comes down to the wire again, my vote is for Qb1. Go ahead and post if I'm not online.

I agree that we will have lost the pawn here for the time being, but I'm quite happy with it. [STRIKE]A possible line is (22.Qb1 Nxf1 23.Kxf1 Bc8) 24.Ng1 Rd2 (if immediately 24...exf4 then 25.Ng3 keeps the rook out) 25.Nf3 Bh3+ 26.Kg1 Rg2+ 27.Kh1 Rxf4 (if 27...exf4 28.Bd5+ Kh8 29.Bxc4) 28.Bd5+ Kh8 29.Qe1. Both sides have good play.[/STRIKE] Edit: that's no good, 24...Rxf4+ followed by ...Rd2. Instead (22.Qb1 Nxf1 23.Kxf1 Bc8) 24.Kg2 exf4 25.Qe1 looks fine. The f pawn is well blockaded after we play Ng1 and Nf3. Like Rich and Zeta-Flux, I'm still advocating 22.Qb1. Last fiddled with by Brian-E on 2013-03-09 at 17:50 Reason: Blundered again, hehe |
