The site also mentions "About 100 computers [which] are running the program in personal homes and in different faculty and staff offices across campus...."

This suggests that they are pushing 1000 machines. That's quite a few idle cycles, even if they only run for a few hours now and then. It also explains how the occasional assignment gets stalled without anyone noticing.

Thanks, that was very interesting.

The numbers for participating PCs given there are probably even higher now, as the date given is 1/13/2009. I remember when I first joined GIMPS, curtisc accounted for about 800,000 Ghz-days in the previous year, and now they're up over 1.9M. They may also have upgraded a lot of PCs since then...
