It looks like we are white since Dubslow chose his team name. What first move do we want?
Common first moves are: e4 d4 Slightly more unusual: c4 Nf3 f4 g3 b3 In general e4 produces a relatively open game where d4 produces a more closed game. Unfortunately the post editor is playing up right now for me so I can't attach an image of the board position. I am sure you can visuallize it right now. So, 1.e4 it was. I was the only dissenter there, but even I will admit we've made an impressive start. They'll be agonising.
Since they have a huge influence now on which opening this will become, I guess there's not much point discussing our preferred continuations before we've seen their reply. But in general terms, how should we go about selecting candidate moves, discussing them, and voting? My suggestion: on our future turns, shall we all try to suggest a short-list of candidate moves, possibly backed up with discussion, and after a while henryzz can then put the list of suggestions in a poll for us to formally vote? Or do other people have different ideas about how we should do it? Last fiddled with by Brian-E on 2012-10-05 at 20:33 |

That sounds a very good idea. With the first move there was a sort of predefined list of common moves which I got from wikipedia(there is some good opening theory on there. I suggest you have a look, especially once we go out of your comfort zone(Brian-E)). Later that won't be the case in the same way. I did mean to have an "other" option in the poll. I would suggest that everyone posts a couple of possible moves and gives reasons for them. Others can then refute some of those reasons/show gaps in logic/missed moves etc. Once we have a reasonable well defined set of moves I will start the poll. Once the poll has been started please feel free not to vote until more discussion/thought has been had. I deliberatly didn't vote straight away in the first poll hoping that there would be some discussion. I could have been convinced to go for d4 if someone had put up a good case for it. Vote chess is more than 4 players voting for a move. It should be those 4 players discussing what move is best. The vote theoretically shouldn't be necessary as we should be able to convince everyone of the correct move. In practice some moves it is hard to tell which is best and people will never completely agree so we take it to a vote. |

I agree with the need for discussion before coming to a consensus. For the first move I figured that opening with King's pawn is the first move for a number of different openings so not much discussion was needed.
I look forward to working with all of you! Rich |
