If you are a field engineer, you are dealing with a completely different level of hardware than common PeeCee parts... I work with a lot of Dell and Compaq stuff and *all* of it is high quality stuff... My Sun stuff is the same way...

However, on the other end of the scale is the $12 300W power supply... Trust me, I have replaced so many of these I have lost count...

BTW, that 235W power supply I alluded to above is a Compaq...

This time in "english". Or something quite (hope so) similar! (sorry once again!)
Hi all!
I think you all are right, but I'd put my 5 Cents for an incompatibility between the DDR stick and the MoBo. It is welknown that VIA KT333 is everything but problem-free (So I agree completely with Outinder). Nevertheless even the temp may play its role, but the fact that these errors happen immediately, that is with the cpu not too hot, make me wonder... The PSU is without any doubt important as well, as Mike says, but, once again, the likelyhood it is its fault is remote IMHO...
Regards

What do you mean exactly by "fatal errors"?
You get OS messages and/or BSODs or just P95 errors?

First of all, Thank you to all! :-)

"FATAL ERROR" is the message Prime95 shows before stopping, normally between 1 and 7 minutes from start.

Yes, I have a VIA KT333 chipset on my ASUS, and the RAM stick is from Samsung; Samsung is not among tested distributors in the ASUS MoBo manual.

Anyway I ordered a 400W new PSU and it will be in place by next week. If the problem persists, I'll go on changing RAM stick.

For the last question: I also ran K10, a program written by Jean Charles Meyrignac to check Euler sums of equal powers, and it seems to work just fine.
I also got a couple of GPFs and a crash while closing my Windows box.
mprime (RH 6.2) gives me errors as well.

I'll let you know how it goes :-)

If possible, try a complete format and reinstall of your operating system.

I had a new 1.6A P4 and overclocked it to 2132. I installed the OS and continually got the same errors as you. After 2 days of part swapping, I reinstalled the OS without an overclock. Once I got all the updates and drivers installed, I put the overclock back on. It worked like a charm. And I've been running for 15 days with no problems.

Er... thanks outInder, the fact is I never overclocked my system...
Could it possibly be the same fault you got? I don't think so.

Is that 61C at no load? Does your MB read the temp from a thermistor or from the on-chip CPU diode?

If it's 61C Thermistor at no load, you need better cooling - you're probably going well over 65C at the surface of the CPU, which is out of spec for max temp on most Athlon models.

If it's 61C on-chip, you have a problem elsewhere.

Gotcha! :)

I lowered CAS from 2.5 to 2.0 and the system runs smoothly.

Now I'll kill the one who sold me DDR266 priced like DDR333. :D

Lowerd CAS to solve a problem? Normally you should make the timings a bit higher to solve problems

Before you spend ANY money, make sure you have the absolute latest updates for your bios! I've seen this turn machines from jello on quicksand to rock, *especially* with high cpu load :)
