I re-installed 98 and it now runs much quicker -- almost as fast a linux now. The only difference I can tell is that I now use AVG instead of Norton Anitvirus.

Also, I am installing Slackware instead of Mandrake on new systems because it is smaller, so I can use smaller disks. With Slackware I can install the base system, Samba, ssh amd IPtools using less than 150MBs

FreeBSD 4.9
Gentoo
Redhat 9.0
RedHat 8.0
Redhat 7.1
Debian something or other on an Alpha box (and I can't be bothered looking it up!)
UltraSparc Solaris 5.7
WinXP Pro
Win2K3S.
WinCE 2.11 (ok, this is cheating --- I only use that box (a HP Jornada) for internet access when on the road and for running Pari/GP.

Many and various OS on machines I no longer boot up. You really don't want a full list.

The 500Mb disk supporting one of my slackware installations went down. -- luckily I had taken a backup a few hours before it crashed. So I dug out a 80Mb disk and booted a Knoppix live CD, ran fdisk and mkfs.ext2 on the hard drive for user space. When I boot the Knoppix CD all I have to is mount the hard drive, make it readable and run my application ( NewPGen ). With the network device plugged into my router I am instantly able to access The Internet -- infact I am typing this message from the Knoppix machine now

I've tried a few other distros including Mandrake, Ubuntu, Knoppix, but I have used various Suse versions over the years 5.? 7.x 9.1, 9.2 and now 9.3. I do have a FC3 disk somewhere but never got round to installing it.

I like the Suse live DVD bootable versions - very handy.

Also have the 9.3 retail boxed set ie 2 dvd plus 5 cd plus manuals.

I can confirm that the linux version of prime95 runs well on this OS.

Suse is one of the few distros (yet) to support 64 bit hardware and I also find it very stable and being pretty up to date on packages.

My desktop environment of choice is KDE (now v3.4).

I have just installed "Sarge". It is very nice! Over 512k DSL the 14 CD download was fairly slow. I wish I had 18M connection and a DVD burner

Now I have debian, slackware and mandrake boxes. What next?

A net install is much faster and a better usage of resources... Why download all that stuff you will never need?

I particulary like how you can use just a few floppies to start this if you want... No CD or DVD drive required...

My first distro was ASPLinux 7.2 (FYI, it is based on RedHat). After I bought a big book about linux and started to move from windows to linux, I undersdood that my distro was outdated for desktop usage (though it was ok for the server -- I got the CDs from some server admin). I asked him about something newer and he gave me the first cd from Slackware 9.1. I tried it and it seemed me a bit hard to configure, though I liked the ability to control everything; as it was only one cd, there were not enough programs (e.g OpenOffice). So, I went to the nearest cd-shop and bought Mandrake 10 (it was the only linux distro there). I liked it at first, but when I finally organized a LAN in my house and we bought 96k/64k unlimited (!) DSL line, I had to chose a distro for the router. I bought a Pentium-MMX 233MHz with 64Mb RAM and 1.6Gb harddisk and found that Mandrake won't run smoothly there (even without GUI). So, I installed Slackware 9.1. It worked pretty well after 2 days of configuration.

I started to read reviews and feedback about different distros and finally chose the distro of my dream -- Debian. I downloaded stable Sarge and installed it. It impressed me by a variety of programs, nearly full localization, security updates, and, of course, package management with apt-get. I liked Debian so much that I installed it on my server. The base installation took about 200MB. Now it is:
Code:
# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 1.6G 470M 1.1G 31% /

I wish I were you. I downloaded 7 CDs at 32 kbit/s (I don't use the line exclusively).
