i was thinking that we shouldnt do it by cpu year

becuase how would you tell the diffrence between some one who just started for a big team and some one who has had lots of experince

i think that # of posts is good but make them so pretty high so that some one cant just spam there way to the top

then make some ranks that have to be awarded

the reason # of posts work is if some one makes a bunch of bs posts or just posts something stupid the mods delete it anyway so it doesnt count twords there total

For a counter-example, go to http://www.math.lsa.umich.edu/~maths.../Lesson3.shtml. There, it shows that there are more real numbers that rational numbers (i.e., a bigger infinity). But if you're as hardcore into mathematics as I am, there is a big difference between infinities. Think of the infinite number of points in a line, then a plane, then in 3d space. Doesn't it seem like each successive one would have more points than the previous, despite both being "infinite"?
I told you: I didn't internalized these concepts. As for me I think, once again, we are on the threshold between Math and Philosophy. Cantor prooved that C is more dense than R which is more dense than Q and so on, that is, given an interval, you may find more "objects" in e.g. R than in N. But...
The starting question was how many are these object overall. The fact that we can "see" the infinity of R before than we can do it with N is telling us nothing but something about the way in which our brain works...
When I was younger my teacher was telling to us that a "point" is something without dimension. Nevertheless, all of a sudden, we were discovering that a "line", which has a dimension (just one!!), is a collection of that adimensional points we were speaking just above... I thought there was something wrong in this and I'm still doing.
Obviuosly this is a limit of my mind, unable to go far beyond this elementary level of abstraction...

A great man once said, "Marty, you're not thinking fourth dimentionally!"
One thing that we have to realize is that the linearity of the infinite primes does skew our understanding of them. We come to them on after annother, and the human mind uses that to place mileposts as it were.

There may be infinite universes, but in our minds, there will always be more atoms than there are stars.

if you wanted to rank, instead of replacing the avatars, you could leave those alone and then just add an "emoticonesque" thing to everybody's signature, and if they don't have one then that could be a default kinda thing..... (I think i made up a new word). The downside is that it would be at the end of the post, or you could indent the first line of the post and put the symbol first skip some x number of spaces then start the post... just a suggestion

The ranks are in addition to the avatars...

I cannot do custom ranks easily, nor ones based on external criteria, like years of GIMPS membership...

I can do them based on post counts...

I just need everyone to agree on the rank titles... We have a lot of good suggestions... I can implement these titles in 5 minutes once you all have decided...

Are you kidding? It should be obvious by now that "we all" can't agree on anything ;)

Personally I vote to keep it just like it is now (no ranks). It already shows the number of posts made, so "rank by posts" seems redundant. Not to mention meaningless as well.

I threw up a quick example of ranks to show you all... I chose Navy ranks because I am kinda familiar with them and I happened to have some images of the ranks...

Obviously, the whitespace needs to be tweaked some...

Nice job, but I'm afraid "ranking by post number" will only increase background noise. I myself wouldn't have written this answer if not to add a post and increase my rank... :D

Default Navy Ranks

The rank pictures look good. During the discussion I had the shoulder patches in mind, but these are more subtle.

Once we decide on a final one, please post a table of the ranks and images in sequence for those who are not familiar with them.

(Ok, so I had two brother-in-laws and a best friend in the Navy, but none of them were career.)

Lets make it really confusing:
Set up the ranks for all 5 services, and a few other countries as well. Then let the members select which system to use in their profile.
(This is where you cut in with "... sorry, this BBS system can't do that...".)

And I was so looking forward to thrashing out the equivalences for a month. ;)

I think Xyzzy will not be too worried about fingering anyone for 5P4mm1n6 the BBS. I do think that the rank stripes need to be widened out some(maybe 100 pixels) to better see definition between the individual stripes.

Remember, the Navy stuff is just an example... Besides, their rank structure is way too complicated...

We have two issues here... Anything other than a simple list of ranks would not be automated and we have far too many users already to manage stuff by hand... The other thing is on a BBS vertical area is very critical... We don't want a real big rank picture because then when someone posts a small one line reply the BBS uses up two inches of vertical space for it...

Personally, I'd do without avatars and ranks, but I know that most everyone else really likes them...

So keep the suggestions rolling... If I am able I will try to implement them on a trial basis if they are simple enough...
