I think that this chestnut conveys more about Hardy's humour
and the pathos of his relationship with Ramanujan than it does about their math prowess. After all, one would guess that they both knew the cubes of 9 and 12. Jeremy Paxman gave the question on "University Challenge" (a famous quiz show here), and fatuously commanded the teams to "Work this out before you buzz in: what is the ...." When someone instantly buzzed in with 1729, he exclaimed "Blimey!" Since then he has learned to be slightly less patronizing towards math/science contestants. French name, never looked strange to me.
Yeah, this is indeed how it is spelled. Don't even start asking me about Gainsbourg! |

Ask Ernst to spell "Hands up or I'll shoot" in German. A current acquaintance of mine is Lorraine. My mnomic for remembering her name is "Luton Airport" (ask Paul). Close second comes songs entitled Sweet Lorraine. (Too many different ones to link to ATM. Just enter it as a U-tube search) Quiche and Alsace.... Any further suggestions welcome! I heard this anecdote in connection to The Good Soldier Å vejk, but later found that apparently it was a rumor; this is not from that book. |

I was working in China about 15 years ago, in a German company. That time I was starting to learn German (which I did not succeed till today, despite of the fact that about 13 of the 15 years in cause I spent working in German companies, including the present employer) and I used to boast to my colleagues about my progress. I remember we were in canteen and I was the only Romanian at a table with 10 German and few Chinese engineers. They were all polite guys and were talking English every time some non-German speaker was around, but that time they got involved in some German dispute. In a pause, one asked me if I understand and I proudly replied that I was learning the numbers, and I could extract the numbers from the conversation, and figure out what they are talking about, but I did not understand all the story. Then some joker of them asked me fast "Was kommt zwischen vier und sechs?" ("what comes between 4 and 6"), to which I instantly replied "fiunf" (five). And they were all under the table rolling with laughing. Later I found out the question was in fact close to "what do you have between your balls and your sex" and guess what my reply was...

Yes, that's what comes of trying to solve Diophantine equations in an alcohol-affected brain. Thanks for the correction.
