There is a school of thought that actually running Prime95 will help prevent thermal shock to the CPU and system board by keeping it at a relatively steady state temperature. Also modern PC's are designed to run this way. Even Intel has used Prime95 to ensure the reliability of thier chips at a sustained rate.

I've been running Prime95 on an 800 Mhz laptop for nearly 3 years. The fan has been running continuously that entire time. It rattles a smidgen now, but shows no sign of quitting.
