Default intel "new" cpu, Xeon E5-2690 Sandy bridge-EP

8 core, 16 thread.
yup, 8 core.
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Int...ise,14362.html
Workstation anyone?

up to 768 GB of ram supported
Now imagine a board with 8 cpu slot...
That would blow away Fivemack 48 cores...

Yikes. But how much does one of them cost? Also how much power would the 8 socket system pull?

according to this far too much for the high end. TDP is between 70 to 150 W.
70 W for 8/16 corz @1.8 GHz for the E5-2650 L, 1106 $
150 W for 8/16 core @ 3.1 GHz for the E5-2687W, 1885 $
The price make it out of reach for now, I guess, unless there is somebody willing to spend a lot of money.
The good news is that it use the LGA2011 socket

But that has a fourth of the cores. Power efficiency wise the EP's are clear winners, but they're so damn expensive...

Acording to http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/I...20E7-8870.html top of the line E7 (10 cores 20 hyper @ 2.4GHz)will cost around 4600 $ By CPU. 36800 $ in core only. So adding a little extra... 42-43k, at the time of the release of the CPU

That's one of AMD's great advantages: they have decided not to charge a more-than-two-sockets tax, so it generally makes sense to buy four-socket boxes. At the moment a 64-thread 2.1GHz 64GB Bulldozer box is about four thousand pounds, which is £500 more expensive than a 24-thread 2.66GHz 48GB Xeon box and (on fully-parallel tasks) significantly more performant. Going for two dual Xeons in one case is £6100, 50% more than the Bulldozer and probably similar or slightly better performance, but with a bit more admin faff and without the possibility of allocating 60GB from a single process.

Why are they so expensive? When will Moore's Law speed up? Where can I get a 16-core CPU and 8 GB Memory both for less than $100? I've been looking everywhere!
