I never thought of magnets. I don't think you'd have to glue them, either. Just put them on top of the foam, and they ought to grab onto the (presumably steel) case underneath.

EDIT: "they ought to grab onto the (presumably steel) case underneath." But that is assuming fairly strong magnets of the heavy, solid variety. Not the refrigerator kind. Those would have to be glued on.

I have a few small, very strong magnets from old CD drives that died. The magnet held the disk clamping mechanism to the top of the case while the tray was open. I don't know about newer optical drives, they seem more reliable so I haven't opened one up for years.

Just thought I'd update my original situation. My mother is taking the conmputer to our local computer repair store, having them reset all software, and switch out both PSU and GPU. So, hopefully by a week from now I will be back to operational with the new capacity. :)
