little by slowly isn't in my limited volcabulary....but it's meaning is obvious, and it could easily be something used where Mr King lives and not where I do.

It might also be part of his private vocabulary...both of the women in my romantic life have their bits and pieces of private vocabulary...for example, "discombobulated cohinky-dinky" = road kill. Both workplaces I have been at also have their private vocabulary; for example, the latest comedy there involved the LMC hoist contactor driver card not having had the latest CRF completed on it and therefore not staying fired when required.

Google returns about 12,400 results for the phrase "little by slowly".

It seems to be a regionalism.

For example:

It's one of many "Slogans Heard Around A.A." (http://www.club12.org/AASlogans.html).

Trinity United Methodist Church in Highland Park, New Jersey is "... on the grow, little by slowly, ..."

Michael Stackpole uses that phrase in his book Talion: Revenant, but one reviewer ("A Kid's Review"), who may not yet have encountered the concept of regional dialect :-), considers it an ungrammatical error that "the editor must not have seen".

A realtor in area code 615 says, "Little by slowly is the name of the game this fall season."

It appears that Stephen King's new novel has the dubious honour of being nominated for this year's awards for the worst descriptions of sex scenes. This amusing article actually includes two extracts from his novel. My favourite, though, is this one from another author. The article describes it as the most "succinct":

How to make it completely obvious that you wanted to say "king of horror", but didn't want to repeat a word.
