Why can't the English learn to set a good example for people whose English is painful to your ears? The Scotch and the Irish leave you close to tears. There even are places where English completely disappears. In America they haven't used it for years! |

Am I in the wrong forum? I thought I joined a math community, where I can learn some new things in number theory. My English is also second-hand, and I don't give a shit as long as other people can understand me. Same with my Thai or Mandarin, and maybe also with my native Romanian, as I did not speak it for many years, except in the closed environment of my family. If my colleagues can understand me (well, after some bargaining, especially when it comes to Thai language) what the hack should I care? Some of you people have an incontestable talent to put all the threads out of track... If I would like to learn English I would join some British linguist's community, and not mersenneforum.org...

I was targeting David. He repeatedly teases** us (me inclusive) for our English mistakes, but on the other side, his expressions (like "Bethlehem my arse!") are really "correct"... only. (well, remark I did not say "nice").
edit: ** original "he tease us" fixed, following the suggestion from Dubslow on PM, and saving my ass from new teasing from David ![]()

Umm, I have about 1000GHz-days/day capacity.
Anything you need send through. I'm in a different timezone, so I may not respond straight away. -- Craig |

I don't hear it here in the UK, but it seems to be a common enough usage in the States. It's non-standard English - perfectly acceptable in informal contexts. Just don't use it if you're writing for your English exam.
