Omar Sharif (né Michel Shalhoub), world-famous actor and contract bridge player, age 83. His IMDB bio notes that he majored in mathematics and physics at Cairo University, and:

Before making his English-language film debut with "Lawrence of Arabia", for which he earned a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination and international fame, Sharif became a star in Egyptian cinema. His first movie was the Egyptian film Siraa Fil-Wadi (1954) ("The Blazing Sun") in 1953, opposite the renowned Egyptian actress Faten Hamama whom he married in 1955. He converted to Islam to marry Hamama and took the name Omar al-Sharif. The couple had one child (Tarek Sharif, who was born in 1957 and portrayed the young Zhivago in the eponymous picture) and divorced in 1974. Sharif never remarried.

Interestingly, his ex-wife also died this year, at the same age of 83, also in Cairo, Egypt.

This is a late reporting of an April 7 death-of-a-notable: Geoffrey Lewis, actor, perhaps best-known for a long collaboration with Clint Eastwood, age 79.

Was watching the 1973 classic western High Plains Drifter just now - in which Lewis played the heavy, the charismatic psychotic killer Stacy - and in checking the "where are they now" (OK, really more a "how many of them are still living?") on IMDB, discovered Mr. Lewis' recent passing. I also did not know until just now that among his numerous children is actress Juliette Lewis - lotta talent in that bloodline.

One other piece of fun trivia from that film - the actress Marianna Hill, who plays the blond "if you'd like to get acquainted..." bimbo in HPD, was born Marianna Schwarzkopf - she is a cousin of none other than general "Stormin'" Norman Schwarzkopf.
