As an architect, he is touted for his technical skill and advanced concepts in "building skin" technology. His prowess as a self-promoter and PR manager is also noteworthy. He designed the United terminal at O'Hare Airport. Memories of the wonderful walkway making people vertiginous right after it opened, prompting modifications, seem to have faded. Now, everyone says it's great. I was never in that terminal, but I can personally attest that walking through the Northwestern Terminal after his modifications were built, was like walking in a House of Mirrors. The State of Illinois Center (James R. Thompson Center) features a rotunda surrounded by 13 stories of balconies, widely admired as an architectural masterpiece. As far as the building functioning from an engineering standpoint, or providing a good workplace, however, some problems soon became apparent. These included the glassed-in upper stories becoming so hot in summer, employees called it the "solar cooker," and some of them brought swimsuits to wear at work. Also, the offices were like cubicles and had no doors. This facilitated a rash of thefts of computers and other expensive equipment used for State business. The building has finally proved to be such a drain on State resources, it has recently been put up for sale. Last fiddled with by Dr Sardonicus on 2021-05-09 at 21:44 Reason: fignix posty |

Dangerous for the motorists too. I knew someone whose niece was killed after another vehicle struck a deer and the rebound sent the dying deer through her windshield, striking her in the head. N-body problems can be deadly.

I guess he is not as famous as Olympia Dukakis or Juan Joya Borja but I still believe this guy had some relative fame in the late 80's
