Yah, that's a classic of 80s cheesy-poof space opera ... I loved the "wedding vows" scene with the lovely Flash-Gordon-GF Dale Arden:
Quote:
Zogi, the High Priest: Do you - Ming the Merciless, Ruler of the Universe - take this Earthling, Dale Arden, to be your Empress of the Hour?

The Emperor Ming: Of the hour, yes.

Zogi, the High Priest: Do you promise to use her as you will?

The Emperor Ming: Certainly!

Zogi, the High Priest: Not to blast her into space?

[Ming glares at Zogi]

Zogi, the High Priest: Uhm, until such time as you grow weary of her?

The Emperor Ming: I do.
And don't forget his turn as the dotard King Osric in Conan the Barbarian: "There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child."

(Best part of the latter movie for me, though, is the great musical score by Basil Polidouros.)

Forgot about Conan the Barbarian. Fun movie. They don't make them like that anymore.

I was actually thinking of Dune (1984 version). "Where there is spice and spice mining, there are always worms."

At the wedding an airship was towing a banner which read, "All creatures will make merry on pain of death.

If it helps, he lost the bet 3.5 years ago, when he turned 100.

According with my knowledge, it was extended for another 6 years or so after his "appeal" (that's why all the fuss, and this is also mentioned in the referred thread here). The extension was some kind of courtesy to him, and to his age and work, like some bet he would never have to pay. But my memory may play tricks on me. I have a very good memory, but I don't remember where I put it.

Anyhow, losing him is very sad. I mean, at 104, it was somehow expected, and most of us will not live to reach that age, but still, it is quite sad to hear that he is gone. The "Guy's law of small numbers" could make an exception... if you know what I mean... Few weeks ago, before hearing about his death, I randomly went to re-watch Numberphile's videos with John Conway, the game of life, and the "monsters", you know how is it, one click here, one there, and you are suddenly lost in youtube, and for some odd reasons, those subjects always ring a bell in my head...

Well.. Rest in peace, again. I can't say more.
