Very sad to hear about Peter M's passing - he was a valuable mentor to me back into my very earliest GIMPS-associated algorithmic forays over 20 years ago. We shared a hotel room at one of the biennial West Coast Number Theory Conferences at Alisomar down the coast in Pacific Grove (within eyeshot of the famous Pebble Beach golf course) once back in the late 90s. Also met many other NT luminaries at those.
I had sent him a new year's letter (care of his brother) at beginning of the year - I've no idea as to the state of his health in the past months, but I hope it got there in time to perhaps provide him with a tiny bit of cheer. |

Peter had a stroke 5 to 6 years ago. I know that he spent several months in the hospital, but I know nothing else. As you suggest, was he recently ill? I have asked both Terry Tao and Bruce Schneier to make an announcement on their websites. |

In addition to announcements such as you requested from Tao and Schneier, I'm guessing some kind of organized Festschrift will be in the works? I just e-mailed Paul Zimmerman about that, will report back once I hear something. |

Apparently he does not intend to mention it. ========================================================== Why are you so surprised? I have never mentioned anyone else's death before. I do anticipate that the AMS Notices will say something in a month or two. |

Reply from Paul Z. re. possible Festschrift in honor of Peter M.:
"I don't know about anything planned in memory of Peter. I guess the book coordinated by Arjen and Joppe was in prevision of that sad event. I will ask them if they plan to organize something." |

I feel very sad reading all posts about Peter Montgomery, but happy in the same time that people here on this forum knew him personally and remember him in such good words.
Rest in peace ! |
