Very sad to hear about Peter M's passing - he was a valuable mentor to me back into my very earliest GIMPS-associated algorithmic forays over 20 years ago. We shared a hotel room at one of the biennial West Coast Number Theory Conferences at Alisomar down the coast in Pacific Grove (within eyeshot of the famous Pebble Beach golf course) once back in the late 90s. Also met many other NT luminaries at those.

I had sent him a new year's letter (care of his brother) at beginning of the year - I've no idea as to the state of his health in the past months, but I hope it got there in time to perhaps provide him with a tiny bit of cheer.

Peter had a stroke 5 to 6 years ago. I know that he spent several months in the hospital,
but I know nothing else. As you suggest, was he recently ill?

I have asked both Terry Tao and Bruce Schneier to make an announcement on their
websites.

Last update I heard was a couple years ago from one of his Dutch colleagues, to effect that he was doing as well as could be expected given the severity of his stroke - was living under his brother's roof in Thailand, getting daily therapy, and seemed happy. But it's typical for such patients to be in fragile health, and he wasn't young anymore, either. Like I said, I've no information on the precise state of his health recently, whether he had complications of any kind, etc.

In addition to announcements such as you requested from Tao and Schneier, I'm guessing some kind of organized Festschrift will be in the works? I just e-mailed Paul Zimmerman about that, will report back once I hear something.

I feel very sad reading all posts about Peter Montgomery, but happy in the same time that people here on this forum knew him personally and remember him in such good words.
