Radio passed away surrounded by his family last night after midnight.

In our small town of Anderson, SC, Sports Illustrated, Readers' Digest, ESPN, CBS News, and even Hollywood have told his story, one about a disabled child in a grocery cart riding the hills behind the old McCants, arguably the most famous person to come out of Anderson.

It was destiny that he arrived on that football field some fifty years ago. He was without a Harvard degree or Pulitzer Prize or professional football contract, but his fame surpassed all of these accolades. And the story is simple: love and compassion can change lives. It has changed his, and, in return, he has changed ours, and we are better people for having known him.

He was 73.

Karen Daniel

Karen Daniel was a petite woman with a soft voice. But when she spoke, her passion, knowledge and confidence demanded the attention of everyone in a courtroom. She knew how to dissect the prosecution's case using the most polite daggers.

Daniel touched the lives of many in Chicago and beyond through her work at Northwestern University Law School's Center on Wrongful Convictions, where she started as an attorney on a half-time appointment and eventually became a co-director. She retired earlier this year but kept an office as an emerita — still coming in often and continuing to work on cases. She couldn't stay away from work for long, friends said.

Northwestern Pritzker School of Law Dean Kim Yuracko said in a statement: "Karen was a fierce, tenacious and brilliant lawyer-advocate whose life's work was fighting for justice. She was universally beloved by her students, clients and colleagues, and her passing is felt near and far."

Gen. Paul X. Kelley, 28th Marine Commandant

Current Commandant Gen. David H. Berger noted the general's passing online, saying, "Gen. Kelley served with honor and distinction."

Born on Nov. 11, 1928, the 91-year-old Boston native joined the Marine Corps in 1950 after graduating from Villanova College in Pennsylvania, according to his biography.

He served as an infantry officer before an assignment at Headquarters Marine Corps. Kelley commanded the newly formed 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company and later deployed as commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, in combat in Vietnam in 1965. During that tour he was awarded the Silver Star.

In 1970 Kelley returned to Vietnam as commander of 1st Marines — the last Marine regiment in combat in the war.

In July 1983, at age 52, he was promoted to general and succeeded Gen. Robert H. Barrow as commandant.

It was only four months later that a terrorist bombing at the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killed 241 Americans.

Years later, the former commandant would call the episode, "the worst emotional trauma of my life."

Kelley rushed to the site to comfort his Marines and check on the survivors.

"When you see 144 caskets on an airplane," he later said, remembering his grief at the time, "it will have an impact on you for the rest of your life."
