As for asking- people who ask the same question multiple times, or in multiple threads, are not treated very kindly. I suppose that can feel like "do not ask at all", but my experience is the times that replies feel unkind are often when the question and answer are one thread away in the same subforum, or 20 posts up in the same thread.

Admitting one is wrong goes a long way. Everyone screws up, RDS, and I, and many others. When our error is brought to our attention we acknowledge it gracefully and thank the person who reports it.

Those who refuse to acknowledge their error and flame the reporter are treated much more harshly.

The way in which one asks a question is also important. Contrast "I do not understand Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, can anyone explain it to me or give me pointers to the literature please" with "Why do journal editors refuse to publish my groundbreaking proofs of the Goldbach conjecture and the Riemann hypothesis?".

About 40 years ago I used to visit a pub in Jericho. (An area of Cambridge, not a town in Israel.)

One of the regulars used to bring her rat to the bar. Absolutely charming little beastie and much liked by everyone else present. It would drink beer from a (cleaned) ashtray and eat peanuts from a saucer.

It would also spend some time on her shoulder and would accept tickling and scratching from other customers.

How 'bout that. I expected a horse would like the taste of beer (check), and a mere pitcher would have little effect on one (check), but I did not know that horses had livers that could process alcohol much faster than human livers can. And I had no idea that beer was a folk remedy for horses with "anhidrosis," or inability to sweat sufficiently (or at all).

This is certainly an educational thread!
