My experiences were way back in 2009 and 2010. There were several, but now, long forgotten in context. Only the name remained. Back then, I am sure some of my questions were of dunce-cap quality. I had never encountered anyone of that personality type before. So, I did not know what to make of it. Since, I have learned the rules-of-the-road with this group. Live and learn.

If only some others had been as mature enough as and LaurV, Bob would still be here making valuable contributions.

I had many colorful interactions with RDS.

He was not one to mince his words. But, strangely, didn't take "fire" well...

Still miss the guy, though. As I do a certain daviddy.

It's not terribly comfortable to be constantly questioned.

But those who are serious appreciate it...

Listen to Danny DeVito's explanation how "this kind of people" works.
I, for one, like such people.

There is one important thing I have learned in the 12 years I have been a member here: Read much, and ask little, or do not ask at all. If there is something I do not understand, I wait. Chances are that it will eventually show up by doing repeated searches.

We have gone way off-topic with all this. Better to wrap it up than to get stepped on.

I respectfully, but profoundly, disagree with this position.

IMO, this is because some people are uncomfortable being wrong. Being incorrect.

Being told one is profoundly stupid is not necessarily the most comfortable thing to hear.

But, perhaps, it's true from time to time...

And if we're not making mistakes, it suggests we're not pushing hard enough.

Stupid Programmer Errors (SPE). Rapid Unscheduled Disassemblies (RUDs). Move Fast; Break Stuff. Et al...

It happens. "Only human..."

Every so often I have to remind myself to "fail faster."

One more thing about the silly picture I posted here. It was intended as a playful jab at our (collective) forum antics. In general, I'm amazed at how well the moderators keep the forums operating smoothly. Thank you, mods.

Posters are often forcefully corrected when posting an incorrect answer to someone else's question- and the worse the advice the less polite the correction is. Posters who usually give valuable advice but blurt out something mistaken are handled more gently than posters who routinely give bad advice or misunderstand questions.

As for asking- people who ask the same question multiple times, or in multiple threads, are not treated very kindly. I suppose that can feel like "do not ask at all", but my experience is the times that replies feel unkind are often when the question and answer are one thread away in the same subforum, or 20 posts up in the same thread.

As is The Prince.

I try to also bring in Sun Tzu's work where ever possible.

Fred Brooks' The Mythical Man Month is required reading.

But, for some weird reason, most people don't seem to read anymore...
