In the molecular biology literature these are 'environmental samples' studies, and they're hot right now. Because increases in the rate at which we can sequence DNA far exceed Moore's Law, and the amount of DNA floating around in everyday things (seawater, dirt, people) far exceeds the stuff in conventional genomes, there's a lot of interest in starting to catalog all the things we've been missing.

An improved algorithm allows over 90% sequencing from a single cell.
