Hi
I have a cable modem connected to a wireless (also has 4 ports for wired) router downstairs and want to get a better reception upstairs. I bought a router/repeater that I want to connect with a wire to the first router through the ceiling. I assume I need to change 192.168.0.1 to eg. 192.168.0.2 to avoid a conflict. What else? Thanks in advance.

You will probably need to set the new router to be in repeater mode (rather than the default, which is simple router mode). Most likely once you've done that, the router will simply take things over from there, automatically picking up and rebroadcasting all networks in range. (Or it may ask you for one specific network to rebroadcast...I'm not sure, having not done this myself. I know there are single-purpose "wireless range extenders" out there which simply boost all networks in range, but a more advanced router/repeater may do things a little differently.)

You want to get into both of your router's config pages...at a minimum, ensure that the new router doesn't call it's network by the same name as the old one. I expect that DHCP will take care of the addressing for you.
You may also want to turn on security, so the silly kid next door can't borrow your net connection to download the latest pirated movie and get you in trouble. |
