Hello,
We had some discussions a few weeks ago over whether the modest power supply on a machine such as an HP Slimline S5-1010 might be able to take the GT 430 graphics card. I'm happy to report that it's been working great. The Kill-a-Watt meter reports a steady 124-126 draw with the Slimline running Prime95 on its two cores and CUDALucas on the PNY GeForce GT 430. So there's even some power-draw room to spare. The 430's production isn't the greatest, but for the price it's a simple and inexpensive way to add the equivalent of a third CPU core, more or less -- and it doesn't require a monster PSU or gaming-level machine, or breaking the monthly electric budget. Interesting.
Whenever bargain or older hardware is mentioned, I'm always curious to know how much energy it will consume. Otherwise, it's like buying an old new Hummer; it may have been a bargain to purchase but the cost to power it sours the deal. I just recently bought two bare bones kits and find them to be exceptional (given the buyers' needs). While burning them in, at idle, they consume 44 Watts and at full throttle consume about 80 Watts. Compared to my current Intel bare bones build of 2006, an E6300, consuming 89 Watts at idle and 140 Watts at full throttle. Per iteration, the new build is more than twice as fast, however, taking into account the energy consumption, in real terms makes it about four times as fast. Not to side track the thread from its main point, now that I know that this card works in your system, I may consider this card for my next video upgrade (I have a micro ATX case with a 300W PSU). |

It's a neat little card. Comes with VGA, DVI, and HDMI outputs. In fact, I'm using the HDMI port to share a monitor with an XP running LL-Ds. That one uses the VGA port, so I can just switch back and forth to see what's going on. Rodrigo P.S. BTW, I peeked at the system you built. I like that mobo -- 8 USB ports plus PS/2s for the mouse and keyboard, and even serial and parallel ports. Very nice. Last fiddled with by Rodrigo on 2011-09-01 at 15:33 |
