Ok, I bought one. FX8120.

Stupid me didn't check that the motherboard needed a flash update _before_ installing the CPU. And one needs an already supported CPU to do the flashing.

So I have a FX8120 system here sitting on my desk doing nothing.

I'll have to go to the shops tomorrow morning to get a cheap socket AM3 processor to install to do the update.

Oh the pain.

I declare myself rather interested but not particularly hopeful.

I'm not impressed yet.

I have the 8120 running stable@3.8GHz, ram@1333MHz.

So far 4x instances mfaktc, with sieveprimes=5000, makes GTX580@795MHz hit only 50%ish usage

Even my i7-920 would max that GPU.

Still fiddling...

Has anyone already run gmpbench 0.2 linked against a recent "make tune"d version of gmp or mpir on the FX or Bulldozer based Opterons?

They're not that bad; six hundred dollars isn't unreasonable for six fast cores and four fast memory controllers, though I'll admit that the motherboards are a bit expensive.

Well I suppose the memory controllers might count, but I could buy two 2600ks for the same money and eight cores, or better, 2.5 2500ks for 10 cores. (Ignoring the whole 'half a 2500k' thing (no pun intended))

You just have to ask yourself: If it takes six men six hours to dig six holes, how long does it take half as many men to dig as many half-holes?

Anyway, the right numbers to look at are total cost of system, that includes CPU and Mobo and possibly box, along with electricity cost. The bleeding edge is always more $$ for the last ounce of performance.
