GIMPS Conference (with Poll)

Does anyone have an interest in a GIMPS conference?

We could collectively pick fun places, meet some of the celebrity "top producers," listen to a keynote speaker, tell math jokes, and debate the merits of GPU computing.

We could possibly get a university to act as the host and provide a conference room, but basic airfare around the US (international would be different of course) is at best $350-$400 and then with hotel and rental car we would be looking at a minimum of ~$800 total. One could build a nice Sandy Bridge compter and power it for a year for that much. Sigh...

Although I voted for the "Are you crazy" option, I do
appreciate the idea.
From personal experience, meeting a "geek" in the flesh
is totally diferent from talking online.

Why couldn't we work on forming some kind of GIMPS event during the yearly MAA MathFest, or perhaps during the AMS/MAA Winter Meetings? Do many GIMPSters have a deep enough involvement in mathematics to attend either of those events? Something like that with all the math professors and students in attendance could really bolster our numbers.

How about a set day with regional meetings (say, a 100-200 mile/160-320 km radius) of GIMPS participants around the world?

Some, yes. Many, No.

The purpose of such conferences is to present new research results.

Who among you will present research papers? Who will constitute the
prgoram committee? Who will review the submitted papers?

Something like that with all the math professors and students in attendance could really bolster our numbers.

Why do you say this? One thing that is intensely disliked by attendees
of such conferences is cranks. They are as welcome as are skunks at
a picnic.

What research results do you imagine might be presented? There are only
a handful of participants in this forum who are qualified to write a
research paper.
