The house everything(*) server disk died a couple of weeks ago. The machine is a SunBlade 2500, so a real antique but it makes a fine server. Unfortunately, it uses fibre channel disks and so unless I can scrounge another machine (and I have my eyes on one) it probably won't get repaired.

Tom's smaller box will be fitted with a 500G disk he included in the deal and rebuilt as the everything server. It will do number crunching in its copious free time. The other one I purchased mostly for its memory capacity and should be particularly good for NFS linear algebra. That box is intended to be almost entirely a compute engine.

The boxen were only collected last night and haven't yet been powered up. They won't be until I've had chance to insert at least one disk into each of them and a spare DVD drive into the putative everything server.
