Default Reboot and Power Down

Hello all,

I've just installed Prime95, and it's pleasantly running in the background. As it is installed on my primary machine that I also do all my work on, I do have a couple questions that a search didn't adaquately answer.

Removal and installation of many of the software packages I use require rebooting. Also, not every software package I use is inherently stable (unfortunately) which requires rebooting, or in dire cases a hard reset.

How do I properly configure Prime95 so I can perform a reboot on the machine so it will continue where it left off? Also, what steps need to be taken if the machine needs to be powered down for an extended period?

Your help is appreciated.

Joe

If you reboot the machine in a reasonably controlled manner, then you are absolutely OK. The client will be shutdown properly.

In case of an accidental or abrupt shutdown the client will have written some so-called savefiles (backup files to disk) which it can restart from.

If your machine goes up and down quite oftenyou can configure the write interval to be fairly short.

See Options => Preferences (Windows client)

In the "Options" -> "Preferences" -> change the "Minutes between disk write" to 10. I believe that is the smallest time period allowed.

So the most you will loose is 10 minutes of work.

Usually, the installer program sets up Prime95 so that it runs as a service under Windows XP... so it automatically starts up on reboot. Have you checked if it fails to do so, and if so, which version of Windows are you using?

By default, Prime95 writes save files every 30 minutes, so you lose at most only 30 minutes of work (less on average) in case of a crash.

As others have mentioned you can modify this to make it more frequent.

However, you usually only need to worry about this for crashes. If you do a normal "new software installed, do you want to reboot now", Prime95 will shut down normally as part of the reboot and save its work up to that point.

Thank you all for the help. So I see I have nothing to fear with normal use of the computer. And my chance of finding a factor is reported as 2.71%

Very interesting!
