I know that everyone has a lot on their plate right now, but perhaps we could do a little cleanup in anticipation of the large influx of new people. In the spirit of cooperation with this effort, I would like to post the following:
Quote:
v22.12 Mersenne Research Software Released

8 November 2002 - GIMPS distributes v22.12 update of Prime95
Download from Mersenne.org

Even faster primality tests on Mersenne numbers to almost 24 million digits long, v19 opens up the first organized attempt to tackle the second Electronic Frontier Foundation Cooperative Computing Award for $100,000.00.
1) the versions are inconsistent
2) We should be pointing to the latest version with the fixes in, i.e. 23.5 or 23.6 or 23.7

This is on this page.

The very first link at the top left of http://www.mersenne.org/ips still links to "Entropia" rather than "2^p-1" (scottkurowski.com). [Edit: oops, that got changed a few minutes ago???]

At the very bottom of most pages there is an webmaster@entropia.com contact address and a link to Entropia.

The PrimeNet logo with explicit listing of 23021377-1, 26972593-1 and 213,466,917-1 will have to be changed... instead of adding M40, maybe it should be changed to something number-independent that won't become dated when a new prime is discovered.

Maybe the PrimeNet logo should also be a bit smaller... right now every PrimeNet web page starts with an almost identical large header, with the list of links (PrimeNet World Test Status, etc) and the logo. Someone using a low-res screen (on a PDA or laptop) or a smaller-height browser window might get confused... every time they click a link, the visual feedback is that they seem to be landing back on the same page.

robreid's stats page at teamprimerib.com (http://www.teamprimerib.com/rr1/top100.htm) has some nice bells and whistles (especially rank changes), which would be nice to incorporate into the official stats somehow.

And as I mentioned in another thread, summary.txt could be generated under a different temporary name and only renamed to summary.txt on completion, in order to avoid the truncation that occurs in the first 4 minutes of every hour as it is generated in-place.

If one had way too much free time on their hands, the numbers in the forty banners primenet randomly chooses from to put near the top of the page could use updating, but that would be a lot of busy work without much payoff.

Since Version 23 is no longer BETA, this page needs to reflect that.

Or is that part of the header?

On http://www.mersenne.org/ and http://www.mersenne.org/prime.htm, the "New Mersenne Prime Found!!!" link should perhaps be removed.

The reason is, it's the first link and it leads to the history page... which is more or less a dead end. When the news is released, we want the influx of new users to go straight to the first paragraph, with links to the download page and Mersenne forum.

Maybe the Entropia banner could be temporarily removed for the same reason? Also, this would save bandwidth if we get slashdotted.

I would disagree. If a new user brings up the PrimeNet page and sees "38 of them are known in the universe. Find one more. GIMPS." that's going to make us look rather incompetent. And considering that's the first thing they'll see that's not going to make a good first impression. And first impressions are the most important. Thus I recommend that if we can't/don't have time to update them that we eliminate any ones that have out-of-date information. I've gone through all the banners. The following is a list of the ones to update/eliminate. I've only included the numbers since the basic formula for the name is gimps*.gif.

7, 8, 9, 12, 12a, 19, 19a, 20, 20a, 21, 21a, 26, 26a, 28, 28a, 29, 35, 36

If someone has the background, I'll be happy to try to update them myself, but I'm not much of of an artist.

Another remark about the banner. Those alternating graphics still contain a banner with the text

It exists. hiding. cloaked. Find Mersenne Prime #39

Maybe that should be updated or taken out of the loop.

Yes, that's one of the ones I listed in my previous post for update or removal.

Bump!

I noticed today that the outdated banners are still alive and kicking. Could someone update these? Or just remove them altogether?
