Prime95 stresses a computer more than average programs do. In this case, a problem has been found with your hardware, even though it might work adequately for most other programs.
You might want to try running the program Memtest86 to see if your computer's memory might be a source of problems. You might want to try running it again with the computer's case open, to see if overheating was the problem. In general though, unless you can find and fix the problem with your computer's hardware, you won't be able to run Prime95 successfully. |

in addition to GP2s advice: if you have overclocked your computer you may consider to undo or lessen the overclock and then test prime95 again...

I was in the same situation when started with GIMPS. Thanks to Prime95 I detect error on my hardware (it was memory error) and fix it. Now Prime95 nicely run on my machine, plus it doesn't crash as it was previously. So, I don't think there are much other DC projects that can help you detect your hardware errors. Nice bonus to all the fun in searching MErsenne primes.

For some reasion, when I run Prime95 (version 23.8.1) on my Athlon 2500+ Barton Core CPU with PC 2700 DDR (256MB) and Windows 2000 Professional, when I do the torture test with anything larger than 8K FFT's, it would fail with errors such as:
-Rounding was larger than expected x.xxxxxx than 0.4 -Unexpected result x.xxxxxxx instead of x.xxxxxxx Anyone can shed any light on this? |

Two issues that commonly come up are cooling and bad memory sticks. These 2 issues seem to pop up repeatedly. Prime95 will get your CPU as hot as any program can. Memory that can't keep up also is a problem at times.

It is unlikely but possible that something (sound, video driver)
is changing the the default precision control or rounding mode of the FPU (x87). Have you tried the stress test with an earlier version of Prime95 ? Have you tried the stress test in Windows Safe Mode ? If it is drivers, in safe mode it may use different ones that don't modify FPU settings. |

In my experience, the memory does not always auto configure itself correctly. For example, my Corsair Xtreme PC2700 can up as
(CAS 2.5) 3-6-6-2-2. After checking the manufacturer website, I determined that it should actually be (CAS 2.0) 2-7-7-3-3 After manually changing the setting in the advanced bios options at boot, the machine became stable, even after overclocking. |
