I am experiencing exactly the same thing.

Aren't the mods already in a special class?

Right, that could work...sort of a "probation" mode, for those coming off bans or who committed smaller, not-quite-ban-worthy offenses.

@davar55: while the mods are in a separate user class, they are still subject to post frequency limits and the like. This could be reconfigured from the Admin CP, which come to think of it would probably be a good idea. (Sometimes mods, especially those who are admins of projects, end up posting multiple short-yet-not-spam messages in less time than the 5 minute limit within the normal course of their duties.)

I think (since Ernst divulged it) that this is now
in the public domain. As you may have gathered, Butch
and I are partners in the crime of occasionally using
strong language in our posts.

I'm not sure how banned he is, but it is a pity,
because he is clever, and (especially privately
to me) hilariously and unrepeatably funny.

The only thing about him I don't understand, is why he
directs so much vitriolic language towards the mods here.

There is no provision, to our knowledge, to rate-limit specific users or usergroups.

Technically, a usergroup could be made to queue messages for moderation. We already have a usergroup like this for newly registered users. However, given the sheer volume of messages certain members generate, we are prohibited by Article Five of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from assigning the task of moderating those messages.

Snake1: Don't even think of suggesting we moderate that stuff!

Hmm...I could have sworn that I saw such an option when I was administrating the short-lived offsite NPLB forum (also vBulletin) a while back. I seem to recall that if you went into the settings for a usergroup, one of the options you could set for that usergroup was post-rate limit (to override a global setting).

It's possible that you're using an older version of vBulletin than we were...but I know for sure our version was 3.x, so it may have been about the same or in fact older (since it's been offline for over a year now IIRC).

BTW, to get back to the original topic of this thread: could we have the left-hand user information back? At the very least, the Location field would be nice (since it tells you at a glance what someone's timezone is likely to be). Join Date, as I mentioned earlier, is also useful. If the trolls are dead-set that Post Count must stay on the profile page only, that I can live with.

So... since some seem so very interested in posting in volumes, how about this suggestion:

Suspend the accounts of those who are posting overly often, but invite them to register again under a new user name.

Then their posting count will be reset...

And then perhaps we can get back to serious debate, dialogue, and discussion without the distraction?

It's probably too much trouble to actually put it in, but here's an idea: start the time-between-posts limit low and then increase it each time they post within a certain time period.
e.g. the second post would have a limit of 15 seconds, the third 30, the fourth 60, and so on. If they don't make any post for twice the current post limit or 1 hour, whichever's longer, then the counting resets. That way spammers (whether bot or human, advertising or: ) can't post too quickly, while normal people won't be bothered much.
