Server availability indicator

Since we have had a recurring issue with server availablity and the 2250 message, I would suggest that we get a server status indicator on the top of the forum somewhere.

It would make it easier for everyone, newcomer and veteran alike, to see what is going on.

It could be a simple icon or image that changes color (red, green, orange), or something like that.

You can find a perl script that gets the info for you. It has to be set up properly, and you have to test the right url, but shouldn't be to big a problem.

Okay...

We have indicators for www.mersenne.org and opteron.mersenneforum.org set up...

Hopefully they don't hit mersenne.org's server too hard... On opteron.mersenneforum.org the load is minimal, even with it on every page...

I don't know how to link to PrimeNet directly... What URL can we use that queries it? If mersenne.org is up does that mean that PrimeNet is up? Can PrimeNet handle being hit this hard?

Do we need an indicator for ftp.mersenne.org?

you can use either an address like mersenne.org, or the IP address in the call to the cgi script.

A 'server-up' test URL that actually threads through the PrimeNet logic:
http://mersenne.org/cgi-bin/pnHttp.ex_?args
where args is the string "ps&4&.&." and the .ex_ is '.exe'.

You will get a response like this if the client transaction systems are operating nominally:
pnResult=0 versionNumber=4 buildID=4.0.031 primenetServerName=PrimeNet Server ©1997-2003 Entropia, Inc. adminEmailAddr=primenet@mersenne.org, http://mersenne.org/primenet

Prime95 performs this URL hit before initiating a series of transactions. Try it in a browser, too. I have previously used the same URL for a pager alerting system hooked into the server.
