Default Colemanballs

This is the title of a very long-running feature
in the UK satirical magazine "Private Eye". Or "Dick"
(for the benefit of our colonial friends across the pond).

It is named after the (I hope) late sports commentator
David Coleman, and is exclusively devoted to gaffes by
people in the media.

I'll kick off with this one from the infamous Graham Taylor
who, to be fair, is pretty careful these days about putting his foot in
his mouth.

"Kenny Dalglish has a job on his hands managing Liverpool.
You can't turn an oil tanker around in...."
(So far, a good analogy)
"....half a mile".

Maybe that is true, but that distance is surely in the right
ball park, and so the whole point of this well-worn metaphor is
missed completely.

The "corpsing" which ensues is at least as amusing as the original gaffe.

I bought the Colemanballs book decades ago. It must have fallen to bits and got thrown away. That and 'Evesdroppings'.

It's rather like a really good record.

You listen to it several times thinking you will eventually
tire of it, but instead you notice new things each time.

Her accent, and in particular her immaculate pronunciation of
"Gramophone" and "Au claire de la lune" now starts me off every time.

Post summat else!
