So it's likely to get an early Double Check. No actual work effort lost.

I'm checking on that one periodically. It's on an old Core 2 Duo system on which svchost.exe periodically saturates a core causing prime95 throughput to drop by 2/3.

I ran across a couple systems lately that were doing something like that. Under a stress load like Prime95, at some point in the next 24 hours the svchost would start going nuts.

I spent a little time tracking it and it went into the acpi.sys stuff and I think it had to do with either some power management settings, or a driver thing...

It eventually went away and I'm not sure why, but I updated all of the drivers, went into the device management and if any device had power management settings I turned it off. Before that, I could reboot and it'd be okay until some random time later.

Other people had seen similar things and it seems like something on the system gets into a funky loop of hammering the system with interrupts, etc. Anyway, just something to consider.

He's the author of mfaktc and a Nvidia tester. He finds a lot of factors in the process, and his credentials are beyond any doubt.
