![]() That's a GPU. Its ability to run XP says nothing about the CPU's architecture. The CPU is an Apple A4, a proprietary CPU which Apple calls a "system-on-a-chip", and (maybe? the Wikipedia article isn't too sure) has that GPU built into it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_A4 Natively it runs the iPhone's OS. That OS was derived from Mac OS X, so it might be possible to port Prime95 or mprime to it (or build one of the more generic LL programs like glucas). It might mean that the CPU will be x86 compatible. But then the iPhone's CPU is ARM compatible. In any case, it's only 1 GHz (and, I'm assuming, single core) so it's probably not enough speed to make it worthwhile. And who knows what sort of battery life it'd have running 100%. It's more of a "big ol' iPhone" than a "super thin laptop". |

Apparently I posted too quickly. Wiki is now updated with newer information. The main CPU is an ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore. The graphics processor is based upon the SGX Series5 Graphics IP Core Family. The graphics processor can run Windows XP, according to the vendor. If Windows XP runs on x86 only, then the iPad can theoretically run run GIMPS on the GPU, but not the CPU.
