Tweaks for RAM heavy systems?

Say, in theory, I have a system with 32 cores and 256GB of DDR3 1066 memory. Are there any tweaks that I can do to utilize more of the RAM? Or is that a exercise in futility?

Select "P-1 factoring" as work type for about half the cores and set the memory values quite high.

Is it really 32 cores or 16 cores with hyper-threading? It makes a difference.

It doesn't fit any currently-shipping object; I _suspect_ it's a four-socket Nehalem EX, in which case it has a true 32 cores.

I should be getting a dual-Shanghai with 32GB shortly, which would be able to run really enormous ECM or P +-1 jobs, but I am not at all excited by the prospect of running such jobs.

Not much else in GIMPS needs that much memory. You might wanna look into NFS projects or some such. Some of them use huge memory.

he he, OK. You could still run GIMPS as a low priority background task. the fact that it is relatively low memory required makes it better as a background task, less to swap out when you want to run something important.

Yes, it is really 32 physical cores. Don't get all hung up on the "currently shipping" thing. ijs
