Over the last few days it appears the BBS has slowed down some during peak hours, so we might have to move to another database server like we did before... Please let me know if you are experiencing these slowdowns as well...

I've gotten several 4-6 second times today... This isn't as bad as before, but it is still unacceptable...

Just got 1-2 seconds with a peak just over 2 secs at 2:33 in the morning (Central Time). Definately not a peak time... Doesn't bother me or anything, just looks kind of weird after my usual .1 or .2...

I just moved our database to another server... Let me know if this helps... We have at least 41 different database servers to choose from...

The changeover took about ten minutes... This time I even put up a little sign saying the BBS was down for maintenance... That was Alf's idea... :)

It was a lot longer than this---a couple of minutes. I think I actually got over a minute just before, when I posted my power failure post. I also got a timeout the first time I tried posting.

Edit: To be precise the "timeout" message was

I'm still trying to figure out why this happens... Everything on our end looks fine so it may to be something we don't have control over... I recently added an extra index to speed up some operations related to editing posts... I think lately the slow times have been less frequent... When we had 66 people online at one time we didn't slow down, so that shows that we have a bit of headroom... Of course, they were just reading and not searching or posting so maybe that has something to do with it...

The last few days the server has been slow in responding to our queries so I think I'm going to move our database to a new server tonight... I think the downtime will be just a few minutes...

I noticed it was really bad around noon central time . 41 sec, ouch!!
That time may have been in conjunction with a bogged down T1 over here ;) .

hmm,

If 40+ people drilling into forums thru topics to unread posts; reading; clicking post-a-reply, writing - previewing - writing - and submitting new posts; doesn't produce a measurable slowdown, then I'm stumped.

(I suppose the reading and writing are an eternity of inactivity to the server.)

The only way an individual could contribute more to the traffic load would be to clear the browser cache, open every forum to a separate window, then open every topic to a new window while running one of those optimizers that pre-loads every link on a page. And then cycle thru the topic windows hitting refresh as fast as possible.

Maybe I can write a script ...

I ran some optimizations tonight... (Thanks Alf and Marc!) Those of you online during that period may have noticed that it killed the server...

I hope this speeds up some stuff... There was one table that was really huge that took forever to run...

[code:1]mysql> optimize table phpbb_search_wordmatch;
+-----------------------------------------+----------+----------+----------+
| Table | Op | Msg_type | Msg_text |
+-----------------------------------------+----------+----------+----------+
| xyzzy_gimpsforum.phpbb_search_wordmatch | optimize | status | OK |
+-----------------------------------------+----------+----------+----------+
1 row in set (2 min 28.76 sec)[/code:1]
