The current plan is to change our database to a different server... Apparently the people we deal with have a pile of them...

For now, remember that most of the time you will get the page you requested... It just might take a few seconds...

Personally, I rarely see one beyond 10 seconds, but I do occasionally get them longer than that...

I am doing everything I can to fix this...

Not knowing MySQL...

Does it have an audit function? I envision turning it on, hitting your optimize button, looking up the audit log, and finding the SQL that was executed?

From what I know, there is NO way that phpbb will need more than 10 seconds to process a page. Especially with a userbase of this size. Have you got the server access such that you can check out what processes are eating up the CPU cycles?

MySQL + vb handle >300 users online without too much trouble on a P3 1000. Now on this website, with only 5 users online and pages taking >10 seconds to generate, I dont think its the db thats causing the problem...

I have figured out how to move the database, but all morning everything has been fast, so I am going to hold off and see if maybe the problem has been fixed...

It is nice to know they have several other servers available to us in the event we have a problem...

Some real slow access this morning. I think this one must be a record...

Edit:

Almost doubled it:

The database is moved to a new server... Moving it was pretty easy... I apologize for the lags this morning... I woke up at noon and noticed that I could not get in at all, so sometime between 6AM and noon it must have broke...

Fortunately, I have done a backup every day so no matter what happens the most we ever could lose is one day's worth or data...

Again, thanks for your patience...

Xyzzy,

It is working much better now. Thank you. Out of curiosity, what hardware is this board's server running on?

I have no idea...

The OS is FreeBSD 4.1.1-STABLE...

It is hosted for us...

http://www.pair.com/pair/facilities/servers.html

I used to host everything at home, but it is too expensive to get the redundant power and bandwidth we need... I have a nice loaded Sun Ultra 1 server that was the primary server for us until very recently... If we ever outgrow this setup I'll maybe just colocate that box or pick up another 1U Netra X1 or SunFire V100...

Fortunately, our current plan is pretty generous... As of now, between everything we run, we use around 2/5 of our allotted bandwidth...

It looks like the move paid off... Over the last few days I haven't seen a page creation time > .4 seconds...

If you all experience any problems please let me know... :)

FYI, I have the forums set to show 100 posts per page... IMO this makes it easier to read, but those of you on dialup need to let me know if this is too extreme...

Even though the pages have a lot of graphics, most of them are repeated heavily, so the difference between 50 posts per page and 100 should just be a small one...
