Default Check up on ntprime service progress?

as posted in this thread: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showpos...63&postcount=6

I also would like to know the recommended way to "check up on" the ntprime service. If I simply start prime95, it seems to just start up a new test thread.

Running Vista32 Home Premium sp2, Core2 Duo E6750, 4g RAM

Thanks!

what i used to do was put Prime95.exe in the same folder as ntprime.exe, then go into services (Services.msc in XP, or the service tab in Task Manager for Vista/7), and Stop the Prime95 service. Then I would open Prime95.exe and it would resume from where the service was stopped allowing status to be seen and end dates etc. Then simply stop and exit Prime95.exe and go back into Services and Start the Prime95 service.

To check my own understanding: Is the following correct as a differently-worded explanation?

Since a user can't communicate directly with a service in the manner he can with a non-service task,

stop the (ntprime) service,

run prime95 as a regular task -- which _can_ communicate directly with the user, and has access to all the same data the service had,

then stop the prime95 task and restart the (ntprime) service.

I just remembered that the ntprime service writes progress to the results.txt file much more frequently than prime95, so progress can also be seen easily by just looking at the results.txt file.

e.g.
