What, Facebook by itself not enough of a timesuck? "Well, I've had a very productive day - added another couple hundred friends and had my personal data leaked to dozens of pedophiles - time to reward myself by taking a break from work to talk about Mersenne primes."

Yay, finally somebody else out there who shares my low opinion of Facebook! I was beginning to think the whole world had gone crazy.

The whole world has gone crazy. Facebook is merely a symptom. Airport "security" is another symptom. And the final straw will be when we see kittens running away from monsters.

I killed myself on Facebook, and lived to tell the tale
Quote:
There must be people who find Facebook fulfilling, just as there are people who enjoy discussing Kanye Westโ€™s latest rant or actually believe the man has a talent for making anything other than a tit of himself. I just happen not to be one of them.

I used no apps. I killed no pirates or zombies. I didnโ€™t kiss anyone or any number of other stereotypical application activities the media trots out when making casual reference to our social networking overlords. I got the occasional party invite that way, but not many. My sole benefit was being friended by people I havenโ€™t seen or heard from in 20 years, who proceeded not to make any further contact.

I decided I could live without them, and the hordes of random people I met at a party once, so I set about looking for the Delete button.

Ever seen that option?

Iโ€™ll save you the hassle. There isnโ€™t one.

There is a Deactivate option. One may deactivate oneโ€™s account. Leaving all of oneโ€™s relationships, apps, wall notes, mails, statuses, photos - all of oneโ€™s data - safely nestled inside Facebookโ€™s servers. Where they can process metadata about your identity and network of friends to their cold information-loving heartโ€™s content. Where they can use your demographic information to increase their advertising revenue. Best of all, they still store data on your computer - so that when your friends send you a link to the photos from last Friday night, Facebook knows itโ€™s you and warmly informs you re-activation is only a click away.

I gave in and quit fighting the pressure imposed by my real life family and friends. I now log in once every few months and spend an hour or so going through everything they sent.

I must say, I find the ubiquitous pressure of the type you describe rather pathetic. Fortunately I still have a few last refuges of people within my immediate family who agree with me that it's completely lame, but nontheless the refrain is the same at family reunions and other meetings--"do you have a Facebook?" The crazy thing about it is, when I say "no", it's not just a simple matter of "no"; they invariably say something along the lines of "why don't you get one?" and I have to defend my reasoning yet again.

@Ernst: Great article! Even the "delete" button isn't enough to completely wash one's hands of a Facebook profile. Scary.
