When I was your age distributed computing projects had to advertise themselves and try to generate interest amongst computer users in order to get any participation. We had to struggle with some sort of idea that people had a choice what they had running on their computers. You have it easy now that you can just start up any project you like and it gets run automatically on all machines which connect to the internet.

When I was young you had to jailbreak Apple devices to run the programs you wanted.

This was before Apple was sued for denying people the freedom of choice.
