Interesting. Well that may also have a selection bias because I was in the same spot each time when I felt them. For all I know there may been a few of these little guys not quite as nearby.
Today’s Earthquake Fact (via http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ ) Each year the southern California area has about 10,000 earthquakes. Most of them are so small that they are not felt. Only several hundred are greater than magnitude 3.0, and only about 15-20 are greater than magnitude 4.0. If there is a large earthquake, however, the aftershock sequence will produce many more earthquakes of all magnitudes for many months. We once had a fiver here -- on the closer of the underwater fault lines outside of the San Diego bay:
http://www.data.scec.org/recenteqs/Maps/118-33.html but I cannot find its records in the SCEC database. That one was felt quite well, probably stronger than Hector Mine (which was a sevener, but distant). |
