Default new MacBook Pro!

I just got a new MacBook Pro! It has a 2.53 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of memory and 500 GB of hard drive space. As you probably guessed, the first thing I installed was Mprime.

However, I have a few questions.

1. Mprime is a command-line program, but I know a GUI-based version is in the works. Would it be safe for me to replace the current version of Mprime with the developmental release?

2. How do I open another program from the terminal without affecting Mprime?this isn't necessary for Windows, but I don't know if this is the case for Macs.

3. Should I manually quit Mprime before shutting down the computer? I know

Thanks.

(Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with Macs. It looks like I'm going to have to start reading Mac OS X for Dummies soon!)

Considering the GUI version is just Prime95 (with a Mac-compatible GUI), and Prime95 and mprime's save/resume/config files are all compatible, I'm 99% sure that part of it will work. I'd say the only possible issue would be that because it's an early release, it might not be 100% stable and/or functioning.

#2...I have no idea.

For #3, I'd guess that it'll close properly and save the status like Prime95 on Windows. But I could very well be wrong.

Hope I was some help, despite my lack of Mac experience.

The Mac GUI version is available: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=12155

Consider getting AppleCare. After 16 months my Macbook Pro started heating up to 99C and downclocking to 1200MHz. The Genius Bar conclusion was it is supposed to do this. I called Apple Support and they've sent me a box to send it to the repair center. I'll send it in next week after my vacation. Let's hope they decide this is worthy of fixing.

Without AppleCare I'd be looking at checking the heat sink cntact myself (Apple has a history of applting too much thermal compound). If they won't repair it, I'll have to do this anyway even though it might void the warranty.

Get smcFanControl to up the fan speed. Get CoolbookController (you don't have to buy it) to check the CPU speed occasionally.

Them's fighting words!

I've worked with both for many years. I state this as simply as possible, you get what you pay for. That is easily proven through Consumer Reports, which shows that Apple computers (especially laptops) require fewer repairs than their Dell/Gateway/HP counterparts. It also shows that support from Apple is superior to that from Dell/Gateway/HP.

In that case, the discoverer probably won't be me, since my MacBook Pro just got assigned double checks.

Well, my MacBook Pro just got assigned first-time tests after completing the double-checks. I guess the next Mersenne prime will be found by a Macintosh, after all. :)

By the way, I have two more questions:

1. How do I hide the Prime95 icon from the dock without closing the program?

2. How to I make Prime95 launch at startup?

Thanks.
