I used to think they were just scary. Many (too many) years ago, during their breeding season, they would chase me on my bicycle each morning and afternoon on my way to and from school. Okay, the previous sentence was worded badly, I was on my bicycle (riding) and they chased me, flying of course. Anyhow, I once clocked them at 50km/h (that's ~32mph for those of you still living in the dark ages), pretty good for a small bird.

They were "mobbing" you. It is their strategy against predators. Owls love it.

Well that could be true, it was a 32km (~20mile) ride so the strength of the sweat smell may have been quite considerable.
