I would hardly call the civil war in Syria a "skirmish." To date it has killed upwards of half a million people and displaced millions more. In a nation whose population was maybe 25 million when the war started, and is now less than 20 million, I consider that to be at least worthy of note. In Yemen, upwards of 10,000 killed and 50,000 wounded. And, of course, many refugees.

You may recall, the plight of Syrian refugees also became a campaign issue in the 2016 US general election.
