P4 RAM options

I was hoping for some advice on what RAM to purchase for a new P4 system on a P4P800 board from Asus and a 2.4C chip. Also do I need two sticks for dual channel or will one suffice? Of course this is with respect to running P95. I've been wanting to take the plunge, maybe a few pints will help

(reference to TPR forum).

While on the subject of such a machine, what do GIMPSters think is the best bang for the buck right now?

DDR memory. RAMBUS (RIMM, RDRAM) is faster on P4s, however DDR is a better value.
Personally i would go with one 512MB DDR400 (PC3200) stick of memory. Dual channel in my mind doesn't gain much performance on anything. However, if this is going to be a dedicated GIMPS crunching machine you could get by with 128MB DDR400.

I can honestly say that if you are indeed buying a system as a dedicated box then you can easily save a tad of cash and go for 128M, but...

There is the future to consider. If you want to retire the box to charity one day you should consider at least 256M.

128M is also insufficient for Stage 2 P-1 on 33M, something you can get around by juggling worktodo.ini entries from other boxes, but if you are looking for a set-and-forget type box, get 256M.

Also, my exp is from 18 months ago. Since then RAM prices have dropped even more. 256M is now going for what 128M did back then, so the saving's isn't all that spectacular.

Unless you are a P-1 freak I wouldn't get 512M for a dedicated box. On someone else's hand if you really *are* a P-1 freak then go for 2G ;) On the hand the feeds me, if the 2.4C is going to be faster than anything you already have then you are likely to use it as your main box and 512M would be the minimum.

Get the fastest DDR Ram you can afford and get the most amount.

My personal recommendation is 2x 256MB CL2 Kingston HyperX. They don't have to be matching for dual channel.

You need two sticks for the P4P800 to run in dual channel mode...

You want at the minimum PC3200... This lets you run a 5:4 multiplier so the CPU is at 250MHz FSB and the memory is at 200MHz... Or, you can get PC4000 which lets you run the memory at 250MHz...

Well, we have a member who tried 128 MB with a fast P4 and iteration times were pretty bad ... until he hailed to the chimp and got bigger sticks ... 256 MB is fine for a w2k machine, but then you struggle with P-1, especially if you use the machine. Better 512 MB for a few dollars more ...

I'd like to thank you all for your help. I was thinking about making it my main machine and 1 gig... I've had time to think about it now and can't rationalize the expenditure at this point being a grad student. Hopefully if I get my thesis done this semester I can treat myself

but we will see. Again maybe some pints might help

. Another note though I have a friend at school with a dual 3.06 Ghz Xenon Dell with 4 Gigs of RAM and convinced him to put Prime95 on it today but it only allows a memory setting of 1842, any ideas?

Ok.. I've convinced myself to go ahead with the purchase of the basics for now. So is KINGSTON HyperX Series 184-pin 512MB DDR434 (PC3500) DDR RAM modules, Model# KHX3500/512 what I should get? Just one stick for now.. I didn't see PC4000 on newegg, am I missing something?

IIRC, there is a 2GB per process limitation on the x86...

That is what I have, but you really want to have two sticks so why not split it into 2x256MB?
