CERN is hosting its first TEDx event from 13:45 to 20:00 (CEST).
6 reasons to watch TEDxCERN this Friday
  1. Because of the incredible speaker lineup. CERN has invited 23 great speakers and performers to the stage.
    Quote:
    Some highlights of the lineup:
    • Philosopher John Searle, the winner of the 2004 National Humanities Award
    • Astrophysicist George Smoot, cosmologist and Nobel Prize laureate
    • Chris Lintott, the head of Zooniverse at Oxford University and co-presenter of the BBC’s Sky at Night program
    • Marc Abrahams, MC of the Ig Nobel Awards and editor of the Annals of Improbable Research
    • 18-year-old Britney Wegner, grand prize winner of the 2012 Google Science Fair
    • Sergio Bertolucci, director for research and scientific computing at CERN
  2. Because the venue will be thrilling.
  3. Because they make understanding particle physics child’s play.
  4. Because CERN is part of the reason we have the internet.
  5. Because Higgs boson is poised to change everything.
    Quote:
“What the Higgs might mean for the fate of the universe,” from theoretical physicist Gian Giudice.
  6. Because you won’t be alone. More than 25 universities, laboratories and organizations will be hosting TEDxCERN livestreaming parties,...
It will be available to the public here
CEST is UTC + 2, EDT is UTC - 4, PDT is UTC - 7
So I figure that 13:45 CEST is 07:45 EDT, or 04:35 PDT (AM)

So far, they have talked about Astronomy, Dark Matter and Dark Energy, Cosmic Background Radiation, Synthetic Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Modern Astrophysics, Citizen Science -- Lots of things really. It's interesting and has a current event vitality.
Wow, volunteer analysts found a planet orbiting two pairs of stars (four stars in the planet's sky).
(also...) The coming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope... Plans to engage people to help handle the big data problem. Maya Tolstoy spoke about seafloor earthquakes, tidal triggering.
Now Marc Abrahams MC of the infamous Ig Nobel Awards and editor of the Annals of Improbable Research about things that make you laugh and think.
Lol. They are singing an aria about caffeine and chemists in a coffee shop to perhaps the score of Carmen.
45 minute break

Hyperactive Sun Fires Off 3 Major Solar Flares in 1 Day

Quote:
This latest sun storm erupted Monday (May 13) at 9:11 p.m. EDT (0111 GMT) and registered as an X3.2 solar flare, one of the strongest types of flares the sun can release, space weather officials said. It came on the heels of two other recent X-class solar flares on Sunday night and Monday, all of which were sparked by a highly active sunspot on the sun's far left side.

From the open access article, Real-Time Imaging of Quantum Entanglement, their results represent the first imaging of entanglement in real-time, where the influence of the measurement of one system on its entangled, distant partner system is directly visible.

The crew of Expedition 36 aboard the Soyuz TMA-09M set a record for the fastest trip ever to the International Space Station. From launch to docking, the trip took 5 hours and 39 minutes. That’s six minutes faster than the previous Soyuz that used the new “fast track” four-orbit rendezvous.
