What's wrong with hanging?
Especially for violators, child abusers, well.. few politicians I know... I would make a pulley (huh! I learned a new English word, didn't know how to call the device and googled it) and raise them slowly up, millimeter by millimeter, and watch their eyes popping out... For few I would use other anatomical part to hang instead of neck, the one which is "diametrically opposed" with the neck...

If you're unconscious (from blood loss) in under a minute
The 'aim' is to tear the heart and aorta to pieces. Total loss of blood pressure, even before one has time to bleed out, is a very quick route to oblivion. I would expect that some perception of impact might get through before blackout, but there would probably not be time for serious pain to penetrate.

Like hanging, firing squads are just more openly brutal than the supposedly 'clinical' lethal injection, but the results are probably pretty much instantaneous, unless the rope is too short, or the shooters miss. Of course, expecting 'ideal' results from any form of deliberate killing is folly. Beheading out to be a 'no-brainer' to carry out, except for the unpleasant dependence on human skill to do the deed. Even guillotines botched things on occasion.

There is no way to insure a clean kill, regardless of method. The problem is the killing itself.

EDIT: Well, with those aims, the only botched execution is one which happens too quickly, so really, no way to loose as long as you don't get too eager. Slow and steady offs the perp with maximum retribution on the way out.

EDIT2: I would still assert that if it is prolonged torment you want, go for life in solitary. No form of killing holds a candle to that.

Consider, perhaps, a small shaped charge fitted to the top of the skull. Done properly it will drill a 3" hole right the way donw to the neck. Cheap, quick, effective and not obviously more barbaric than the fielded alternatives.

Around the neck - this setup has been featured in many 'terror on the XYZ' tv-episodes/movies - is better. Less hard tissue, no brain/bone spatter, and you can still reassemble the results into something less upsetting to any relatives/loved-ones. They could simply use a downsized version of the same kinds of collaring shape charges used to slice through steel girders in building demolitions.

But I still think a modern - which is not to say hi-tech in the electronics-using sense, rather the mechanical-design one - reliability-enhanced guillotine might be best of all. Hack, maybe one could simply repurpose an easily obtainable hydraulic wood-splitting maul.

Good idea. However, perhaps a bit of redundancy (read: multiple independent charges)...

Perhaps have a computer in the loop. Require the Judges which condemned the individual to death to each turn a key and/or enter a code. Then a countdown begins...

The condemned might be given a switch available to them which triggers the act...

Personally, if I was the condemned (even if innocent) I'd prefer to trigger the action rather than waiting with uncertainty for the act.

Imagine running the debugging on that kind of system! 8-|

I didn't see the movie but I am kind of partial to the idea presented in a movie a friend watched and told me about 15 years ago.....take all CAREER and/or Death-Row criminals with no hope of Rehab and drop them off on a remote island along with their "peers" but with no hope of ever getting off the island.
No expense (other than the Helicopter ride) ... no one has to ask themselves if they are willing and able to put another to death

Not a problem. The equipment can first be tested in isolation with dummy explosives. Then test it on mechanical dummies and finally on volunteer corpses --- volunteered either pre-mortem or post-mortem by next of kin.
